I helped run sound at a small esports venue for a season as a side project, expecting the experience to have little crossover with wedding and club work, and instead came away with several sound design habits I now use at nearly every event I run. Esports venues solve a genuinely specific and difficult sound problem, and the solutions translate more directly to DJ work than the surface difference between the two worlds suggests.

The core challenge at an esports venue, delivering clear, punchy sound to both a live crowd and a broadcast feed simultaneously, forces a level of precision in speaker placement and frequency management that most DJ setups never have to think about as rigorously.

Why esports sound design is so demanding

An esports venue needs commentary and in-game audio cues to stay clearly intelligible over crowd noise and music stings, which means far more careful attention to frequency separation than a typical DJ setup, where a somewhat muddier low end is more forgivable since the goal is dancing rather than following a specific audio cue. This forced precision, keeping the mid and high frequencies that carry speech clear even during loud moments, is a discipline worth borrowing regardless of event type.

The improvement in clarity is noticeable even on a modest rig once the placement discipline is applied correctly.

A simple starting point for anyone wanting to apply this without specialized measurement tools is a basic smartphone sound level app, used to check relative volume consistency across different points in a room rather than relying purely on how a mix sounds standing directly at the booth. This alone catches a surprising number of placement problems that are invisible from the DJ's own listening position but obvious to a guest standing across the room.

I now walk the full room during sound check specifically listening from several different guest positions, a habit borrowed directly from how esports venues validate sound coverage before doors open, and it has caught more than one placement issue that would have gone unnoticed from the booth alone.

This full-room check takes only a few extra minutes at setup but consistently reveals dead spots or uneven coverage that would otherwise go unnoticed until a guest mentions it mid-event, at which point adjusting speaker placement is far more disruptive than catching the issue beforehand during a quiet sound check window. Borrowing this level of methodical checking from a field that treats sound quality as mission critical has quietly improved almost every event I have worked since I started doing it.
